Viktor and Talya, the two critically endangered Amur tiger cubs, were born at the Zoo on September 26, 2011, to first-time mother Marta. They are the second generation of cubs born at the Zoo; Marta was born at the Zoo in 2003. Their father, Strannik, arrived at the Zoo on loan earlier in 2011. He, too, is on exhibit, separate from Marta and the cubs. The cubs’ names come from the Russian language, recognizing the Amur tiger’s primary habitat in eastern Russia. Viktor’s name means “conqueror” and Talya’s name means “birthday.”

Tuli (Swahili for “calm or quiet one”) was born at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011. She weighed about 160 pounds and stood about six feet tall! Tuli was born without assistance and was very healthy. Her big brother Enzi and her father Mowgli are already on exhibit at the Zoo, along with another female giraffe, Michelle. Tuli and her mother Elvira are available, during limited hours, in our Africa! exhibit. If they’re not on exhibit there, you may be able to see them in the indoor giraffe viewing at the end of the Africa! Overlook.

Kojo (Fanti for “born on a Monday”) was hatched on Monday, June 27, 2011, with some help from the Zoo’s chief veterinarian, Dr. Chris Hanley. When Zoo animal care staff weighed him, he was just 3.5 ounces! Kojo is the first Kori Bustard chick to hatch at the Zoo and one of fewer than five Kori Bustard chicks hatched nationwide this year. He is being hand-raised by Zoo staff and has limited exhibit hours. If you miss the little guy, you can see his father Kiva and his mother Kononi in their adjacent yard near the Great Apes.

Lucas was born at 11:28 pm on Friday, June 3, 2011. His estimated weight was approximately 300 pounds! Lucas was born without assistance and was very healthy. His mother, Renee, is also the mother of Lucas' older brother Louie. Lucas bonded well with his mother, nursed
independently and showed plenty of youthful curiosity as he explored his
environment. He stood within minutes of birth, and Renee showed excellent material behavior.
