2008—The Year of the Frog
As The Toledo Zoo and other institutions around the world celebrate the Year of the Frog, we encourage you to take part in our amphibian-related educational opportunities (highlighted in green). Observe their astounding diversity, learn about their needs, and discover what you can do to help prevent their rapid decline!

 
           

Family Classes

Smooth, Slimy and Disappearing
Visit our new exhibit to meet Amazing Amphibians and learn how each person can help in the campaign to save these animals. Special stories, songs, crafts and slimy encounters will make this as much fun as it is informative.

     Session 1 – Saturday, May 3, 9:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
     Session 2 – Saturday, May 10, 9:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
     Session 3 - Saturday, February 9
     Session 4 - Saturday, February 23
Members - $8 for adults, $3 for children 6-17 years

Endangered Treasure Hunt
Commemorate National Endangered Species Day (May 16) over the following weekend. Learn about the incredible efforts to save species here at The Toledo Zoo. Get acquainted with Species Survival Plans and discover the causes of endangerment. Visit some of the Zoo’s most endangered species, learn what your family can do to help, and maybe win a prize! Note: each family is asked to work together at home to create a poster about endangered animals and their conservation to present at the class.

     Session 1 - Saturday, May 17, 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
     Session 2 - Sunday, May 18, 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Moonlight Meanderings
Bring the family to meander in the moonlight in the quiet and beauty of the Zoo after hours. Your education tour guide will share stories and information about species seen after dark. Stories, songs, crafts and a snack will make this a family outing to remember.

Preschool Offerings

Kermit and Company
3-4 years with one Adult
Everyone knows some famous frogs, from Froggie who went a courtin’ to the Frog Prince to Kermit to Mr. Toad. Bring your tadpoles to read a few stories, sing a few songs, and learn frog basics so they’ll grow up valuing and understanding amphibians.

Strolling with Strollers
1-3 years with one Adult
9:30 a.m.

Take a lovely spring walk through the Zoo with the little ones secure in their strollers. Your babes can begin learning about animals and nature by visiting spots around the Zoo, where you’ll find hands-on experiences just waiting for their wonder. Encounter sounds, smells, sights and opportunities to touch plants and animals, spurring their natural desire to learn. Age-appropriate snacks will be served. Bring your own bottle—baby bottle, that is.

Animal Tales
3-4 years with one Adult
These ever-popular sessions might include a song, a game, a craft, a visit from a Zoo education animal, or a trip to a Zoo site to see an animal. But they’re sure to include charming animal tales (and animal tails). Every child must be accompanied by one adult only, Please, do not bring siblings.

     Session 1 - Tuesdays, 6:45 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Children's Offerings

Frog Fest
5-6 years

They jump long distances, catch food with their tongues, change from swimmers to hoppers and sing amazing songs. Your little learners can explore these Amazing Amphibians with crafts, information and frog calls. Of course, we’ll meet some slimy little leapers to keep things jumping!

It Really Isn’t Easy Being Green
9-12 years

Amphibians are disappearing at an alarming rate. Learn about what frogs eat and what they need to thrive. If you’re signing up for this class, you probably already love frogs—now learn how you can help them.

Animals! Camcorders! Action!
5th grade to 8th grade

Bring your camcorder and a fully charged battery and take the Zoo home with you! The antics of our Zoo animals never fail to delight, and people really enjoy nature shows. Now imagine that the footage you watched was created by you! We’ll explore the Zoo before or after hours to capture our animals on film for you to enjoy later with others.

Jr. ZooKeeper Weekend Program
11-14 years only
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Have you always wanted to be a Zoo Keeper? Find out by joining us for a day! Working alongside our Children’s Zoo staff, you will take part in lots of hands-on activities, including diet preparation, cleaning and feeding. You won’t want to miss this opportunity, so pack a lunch, dress for the weather and join us in the Children’s Zoo! Registration is limited to four students per session.

Trainer for a Day

Have you ever wanted to work with animals? If so, then come join us for a day and learn about the Zoo’s philosophy on animal training. You’ll work hands-on with our Education Collections Manager and the education program animals and discover what it takes to care for and train these animals. You’ll even get to make some enrichment for these animals! By becoming a Trainer for a Day, you’ll receive lunch, a t-shirt, a training device, and a disposable camera to record your memories of this special day. This class is limited to 3 participants per session.

Adults Only

Garden Gourmet
18 years and older
4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

In addition to being good for both you and the planet, vegetarian meals can be a gourmand's joy! The Zoo's Chef Sam will guide you in the kitchen as you learn about health benefits, discover products you might never have heard of, and enjoy some yummy veggie dishes. You'll take home recipes and a sample or two. Plantt-iful fun and feasting!

Teacher Workshops

Frog-Friendly Education
Saturday, May 3, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Leap into this professional development opportunity that will prepare you to become an amphibian authority in the classroom.
• Learn about frogs from Toledo Zoo herpetologists who will share some of the amazing research projects and conservation work going on here at the Zoo.
• Tour the new Amazing Amphibians exhibit with a herpetology keeper as your guide.
• Enjoy breakfast at the Zoo
• Receive great cross-curricular resources and ideas for your classroom.

$20 per participant. All teachers MUST pre-register.

 
Registration Guidelines
  • Please read carefully! Registration is by mail, fax or e-mail only.
  • You may photocopy the registration form if you have more than one child to register.
  • Please indicate on the registration form an alternate date that can be used in the event that your first choice is unavailable.
  • We will place siblings together when possible, but we cannot guarantee the placement. For your child's enjoyment, please comply with the age guidelines.
