Director of Food and Beverage

The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium is a forward-thinking, global leader in wildlife conservation located in Northwest Ohio. This visionary organization is seeking a Director of Food and Beverage to lead and direct the overall operations of food and beverage services and staff at the Toledo Zoo.

Director of Food and Beverage Qualifications:

Full-Time Horticulturist – Landscape – Under general supervision, provides duties necessary to complete horticulture activities and projects for the Toledo Zoo. Coordinates, maintains, and assists with various operational and human capital related departmental activities. Installs and maintains plants in exhibits, annual flowerbeds and landscapes, maintain turf areas and applies pesticides and fertilizers, oversees special projects using proper horticultural methods while considering conservation related programs. Will also maintain areas throughout the season including weeding, watering, pruning, mulching, mowing and trimming and will perform spring and fall clean up. Will work with animal keepers from other departments to coordinate necessary maintenance or installation work in animal exhibits in assigned areas. Performs snow removal and salt application. Assists with the coordination, installation and removal of lights for “Lights Before Christmas” light show. Will also assist with proper care and maintenance of the greenhouse and Ziems Conservatory and will be responsible for supervising and working with seasonal and part time employees.

This position is an hourly non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires forty hours per the scheduled workweek. Associate’s Degree or additional technical education in horticulture or a related field, a minimum of three years of previous landscape/horticulture experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience to satisfy the required skills and knowledge for the position. Landscape/horticulture supervisory experience preferred. Must possess or obtain Ohio pesticide applicators license. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.

Full-Time Sous Chef – Under general supervision, the Sous Chef will support the Executive Chef in the daily activities of the catering department. Performs duties related to catering services such as display set-up, monitoring food production and food quality, etc. Will also assist Executive Chef in the implementation of policies and procedures for staff, maintaining budgeted guidelines related to kitchen expenditures and execute catering services provided for events to promote and ensure that the established standards of customer service, food quality, and cleanliness are met. Will also supervise and direct the work of subordinate kitchen personnel which includes instructing, assigning and reviewing work; planning; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; and recommending disciplinary actions. Will perform catering service food production of diverse menus in a multi-event/location facility which includes our newly renovated Malawi Event Center. The Malawi Event Center is one of the largest event centers in the Toledo area that can accommodate up to 850 people! The Sous chef will prepare food and buffets, set up supplies, serve food to customers, clean up storage areas, order food items from warehouse, transport food to various locations, and other duties as assigned.

High School Diploma required. Prefer formal education in a Culinary Arts or Hospitality program with a minimum of two years of experience in a similar capacity. A combination of education and experience may be considered to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to fill the position. Supervisory experience is preferred for the position. PART-TIME AND SEASONAL POSITIONS

*Note to applicants:

Part-time normal workweek requires working flexible hours including weekends and holidays. Positions may require working in all weather conditions, the ability to stand for extended periods and may require you to walk extensively on Zoo grounds. Part-Time employees can work up to 125 hours a month.

Seasonal positions typically begin in the April/May timeframe and end in the September/October timeframe. Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays. Seasonal employees can work up to forty hours a week during their designated season.

Aerial Adventure Point of Sale and Ground Support Staff (Part-Time and Seasonal) – The Zoo is looking for staff to support our Aerial Adventure Ropes Course and Zip Line. Employees will be responsible for the Adventure Course Sales Hut, ensuring guest paperwork is complete, helping guests put on safety equipment, and guiding guests back to the ground on our free-fall devices. Employees must be outgoing, friendly and energetic. Extraordinary customer service and attention to detail will be key. Staff must be at least 18 years old. Aerial Adventure Supervisor and General Staff (Part-Time and Seasonal) – Are you ready for adventure? The Zoo is looking for staff to operate our Aerial Adventure Ropes Course and Zipline. Employees must be outgoing, friendly and energetic individuals who are willing to assist and coach guests through high ropes challenges. Must be safety conscious, have good communication skills, and be comfortable working at height. Previous experience on ropes courses, rock climbing, or zip lines is a plus. General Staff must be at least 18 years old and Supervisors at least 21 years old. Staff must successfully complete an Adventure Course Training held in May. Back of House Catering (Seasonal) – Employees prepare food for a variety of catered events that could include banquets, picnics, weddings, special member events, public events and other catered events. Will also be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of department. Hiring cooks, dishwashers and cold and hot food prep staff. Previous experience working in back of house operations a plus! Back of House Catering Leaders and Supervisors (Seasonal) – These positions are responsible for overseeing events in all of the Catering facilities and supervising the BOH staff.  Requires knowledge of food sanitation guidelines, exceptional customer service skills and at least 1-2 years supervisory food service experience. Bartenders (Part-Time and Seasonal) – These positions are responsible for bartending during events at various sites, following policies and procedures and working with clients to ensure customer satisfaction. May also organize and maintain stock areas and assist with inventory/audits. Requires bartending experience, knowledge of food sanitation guidelines and exceptional customer service skills. Catering Office Assistant (Part-Time) – Office Assistant is needed to assist the Front of the House Catering Managers with general office duties such as answering phone calls and voice mail, opening mail, handling any catering requests, communicating requests with managers, scheduling staff for their shifts, ordering inventory for events, scheduling interviews, and preparing for events. This position works directly with the Front of the House Catering Managers and customer service is a top priority. We are looking for someone who is friendly and outgoing and who has previous administrative office experience. Hours are 9am -3:30pm on Monday and Friday and 10am- 4:30pm on Wednesday. Concessions (Part-Time) – Employees will work in a fast-paced food service environment and will have high visitor interaction. Responsibilities could include cash handling, working with food preparation, working in concession stands, organizing and conducting birthday parties and maintaining cleanliness of department. Front of House Catering (Part-Time and Seasonal ) –  Currently looking for servers. Employees will be working in a team environment and be under general supervision. The responsibilities include the  set up and tear down as well as management of catered Zoo events that could include banquets, picnics, weddings, special member events, public events, concerts and other catered events. Must be able to work indoor and outdoor in different weather conditions.  Maintaining high sense of urgency and customer service skills are a must. Horticulture (Part-Time and Seasonal) – Horticulture staff maintains all of the permanent landscapes by mowing, weeding, watering, fertilizing, mulching, planting and maintaining the annual flower beds, rake leaves, and maintain ornamental water features. They also assist with the installation and removal of the holiday lights for the Lights Before Christmas display. Membership Sales (Part-Time) – Position requires approaching Zoo visitors to solicit the sale of Zoo memberships on-grounds and will also assist with various administrative tasks. Recruiting Coordinator (Part-Time) – The Toledo Zoo and Aquarium has a great opportunity in their human resources department for a forward thinking, organized, analytical and creative individual to fill the role of part-time recruiting coordinator in a high volume, fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Screen applications, complete reference checks, extend job offers, schedule pre-employment screenings, coordinate and conduct new hire orientations and Zoo tours. May be responsible for hiring 400 part-time and seasonal employees during peak season.
  • Brainstorm ideas, then plan and facilitate part-time and seasonal employee events (ex. Zoo Olympics, etc.Prepare and advertise job postings for internal vacancies.Research and prepare various reports that are technical in nature.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for internal employees, and job seekers, when answer questions regarding employment opportunities, company benefits, compensation and career advancement.
  • Comply with all employment laws, policies, procedures, safety rules and regulations.
  • Collaborate with the recruiting team to create recruiting best practices, standards and guidelines.
  • May also attend job fairs and other community events to promote part-time and seasonal opportunities
  • Answer telephones and emails, file, complete general office work and other projects, as assigned.

Average of 25 hours per week. Must be willing to work occasional evenings/weekends. Candidate that holds or is currently pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Marketing or other relevant degree preferred. Snooze Guide (Part-Time) – Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for the operation of the Snooze overnight program, including setting up facilities, greeting and escorting groups of children and chaperones through the activities and Zoo grounds, handling small animals, presenting animal demonstrations, delivering the education program content with positive guidance and leadership, maintaining the safety of visitors, sustaining orderliness, fostering open communication to all parties and serving the Zoo’s mission.  This position reports to the Education Overnight and Scouts Program Coordinator. Experience leading children in informal science education and completion of one year of college.  Must be available to work scheduled weekends and evenings, and willing to sleep over night at the Toledo Zoo. Background and experience in animal sciences, education, nature, camping or animal-related jobs also a plus and First Aid/CPR certification preferred. Summer Camp Teacher (Seasonal) – The Summer Camp Teacher will be the primary staff in the Toledo Zoo’s all day summer camps. Will prepare for camps daily including gathering supplies, setting up camp rooms, reviewing schedule and will lead all education aspects of the Camp. Will supervise groups of children in classroom setting and throughout the Zoo and assist children as needed to help them to fully participate in camp. Will also communicate camp policies, issues, comments, and concerns to parents, camp teachers, and camp manager when appropriate and direct teen volunteers in tasks to assist with Camp Program. Preference will be placed on individuals that have or are pursuing a degree in the education or biological science fields.  Past experience working with children in camps or education programs is desired. Wild Toledo Biologist (Part-Time) – Under limited supervision, the part-time biologist will perform a variety of duties regarding the implementation and management of Wild Toledo initiatives, conservation education outreach, collection and collation of field data for diverse taxa, ecological restoration, and writing reports. Acquires and prepares data, including preparation of reports, works with the Conservation Biologist regarding the husbandry of live butterflies, assists in the development of programmatic materials and communicates and interacts with various departments. This position also teaches and presents various educational programs and presentations for visitors and various organizations in the community.  This part-time position will be scheduled an average of 28 hours a week. Must be able to demonstrate an excellent working knowledge of conservation biology themes and techniques and a willingness to learn additional information. Preference will be given to current biology university students as well as those with degrees in the field. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Zoo’s fleet insurance carrier. The Toledo Zoo is an EOE and a drug/alcohol free work place.
