Built
in 1937, The Toledo Zoo’s Aviary was renovated in 1998 and
the following year received the Exhibit Award for Excellence from
the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. With its innovative exhibits,
including three walk-through habitats, and astonishing array of
birds, you’ll see why this Aviary is something to crow about!
In
addition to providing hundreds of birds with top notch animal care,
The Toledo Zoo’s Aviary has also been at the forefront of
species preservation with a number of exciting breeding successes.
Recent successful hatchings have included a saddle-billed stork
named Jabari, a lesser bird of paradise, and no fewer than five
lesser green broadbills. Only five zoos in the world have ever hatched
this species, and only three of these zoos had chicks live more
than 30 days – one of these was Toledo back in 1997.
