The Tiger Terrace at The Toledo Zoo is home to Amur tigers (formerly
known as Siberian tigers), Asian sloth bears, white-naped cranes
and African penguins.
The
three Amur tiger cubs, born May 29, 2003 to first-time parents Sasha
and George, are now on exhibit with Sasha in Tiger Terrace. The
cubs will remain with Sasha for approximately 1-1/2 years. Then,
the tiger SSP (Species Survival Plan) will transfer them to other
facilities where they will eventually contribute to the conservation
of their species through future breeding opportunities.

The 5 remaining tiger subspecies (out of the original 8) are all
endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation as well as poaching
of both tigers and their prey.
Two Asian sloth bears, Han and Deva, are also on exhibit in Tiger
Terrace. Han was brought to The Toledo Zoo from Warsaw, Poland in
May of 1997. Deva has been
here on loan from the San Diego Zoo since April of 2001. The two
produced a female cub, Asia, in February of 2002 - the first sloth
bear ever born at The Toledo Zoo.
The
sloth bear's natural range includes India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan,
Sri Lanka, and the foothills of the Himalayas. Fewer than 5,000
sloth bears are left in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching.
Fewer than 100 are found in zoos worldwide. Due to the small size
of the wild and captive sloth bear populations, extinction is a
very real possibility.
