Whether you’re a teacher or parent, you can take advantage of a terrific educational resource courtesy of your Toledo Zoo! The Zoo’s Discovery Boxes contain books, activities, posters and games that bring the wonders of nature right to your classroom or living room. Each Discovery Box is aligned to Ohio’s Academic Standards, making them as educational as they are engaging.

Discovery Box Policies:
Reservations for Discovery Boxes should be made at least two business days in advance of the day that you wish to pick up the box, subject to availability. Reservations may be made up to one year in advance. The traditional loan period for a box is two weeks.
Pick-up & Drop-off
Discovery Boxes are picked up and dropped off from the Zoo Library in the Museum of Science. When you reserve the box, we’ll email driving directions to you. Pick-ups and drop-offs need to occur during business hours (8 am - 4:30 pm), Monday – Friday.
Deposit & Fees
Deposit – A $25 deposit check (made payable to the Toledo Zoo) or valid credit card number is required on file while you have a box out. This deposit may be kept on file for an extended period of time if more Discovery Boxes will be used at later dates. If items are missing or damaged upon the box’s return, the deposit will be used to help cover the costs.
Loan Fee - A $5 charge per box (check, cash, or credit card) is required for each two-week period that the box is checked out. If available, boxes can be renewed for a third week, with an additional charge of $3, or loaned out up to four weeks for $10.
Both the deposit and loan fee are due at the time of Discovery Box pick-up.
There will be a $1-per-day late fee for each Discovery Box, unless you have made prior arrangements to extend your loan period. Again, this fee will be due when the box is returned.If the fee is not received at that time, it will be taken from the deposit or an invoice will be sent.
If you need to cancel your reservation, please email or call as soon as possible so we can make the box available for other patrons.
An inventory list is included with every Discovery Box. Please use this inventory list to ensure that all items are present before you return the Discovery Box. If your Discovery Box has no inventory list, please contact us and we’ll email you one.
If an item is missing from a Discovery Box when it is returned, the borrower will be contacted and is expected to return the item immediately. If the item cannot be found, the borrower will be responsible for the replacement cost. If the missing items are not returned after the borrower is contacted, the replacement cost will be deducted from the deposit check. If there is any money left over, a refund check will be issued. If the deposit check does not cover the entire amount of the replacement cost, an invoice will be sent for the remaining amount due.
