Full-time Positions

Full-Time Herpetology/Invertebrate Zookeeper
Candidate must have knowledge of the care and maintenance of amphibians, reptiles, and terrestrial invertebrates in captivity. The keeper will be required to perform animal care duties for a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and terrestrial invertebrates under the supervision of Herpetology/Invertebrate managers.  A bachelor’s degree in zoology or a related field and previous work experience in a similar zoo setting are preferred. A combination of experience and education to fulfill the necessary skills and requirements for the position may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.  Experience working with venomous reptiles and large crocodilians preferred.  Other duties include cleaning, building small exhibits, maintenance of life-support systems and enclosure, maintenance of food cultures, and other supportive tasks for the operation of the department. Associate Veterinarian
Under the direction of the Chief Veterinarian/Director of Animal Health & Nutrition, this individual is responsible for providing care to all zoo animals. The essential functions include: performing routine, preventative, emergency and surgical care, prescribing medication, and conducting clinical pathology and post mortem evaluations. Will mentor veterinary students and interns and also review and develop veterinary protocols. As necessary will assist in managing the commissary operations, evaluate nutrition programs and diet formulations and provide input on animal behavior training, exhibit design and emergency escape protocols. Effective interdepartmental communication skills necessary to assist veterinary department staff, curators, zookeepers, and other staff in attaining relevant goals.

The minimum criteria requirement includes a Doctoral degree in veterinary medicine and one year of practical experience in a zoo facility. Must be able to obtain a State of Ohio Veterinary License, USDA veterinary accreditation and a DEA license.  Being boarded by the American College of Zoological Medicine is preferred or must become boarded within five years of hire. Full-Time Communications Coordinator – Guest Engagement
Position is a contributing member of the communications team and will be responsible for the direction and development of fun, informative and compelling content for the Toledo Zoo Blog, website and several social media sites. This position will also be the point of contact for customer inquiries that are sensitive in nature. Will create, acquire, and maintain compelling content for Toledo Zoo’s brand journalism platform used to tell the story of Toledo Zoo from an in-depth and behind the scenes perspective. Will manage content for social media platforms with an aptitude to reach millennial audiences and other stakeholders who utilize Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Periscope and other related social media outlets. Will gather, organize, and create content for Toledo Zoo’s website which requires working with various departments to obtain up to date information. This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Bachelor degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or related field and a minimum of 2 to 4 years in a communications/public relations arena with focused experience in customer engagement, social media and web content or any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities. Full-Time Security Officer – 3rd Shift/Midnights
The primary objective of position shall be to protect the property and integrity of The Toledo Zoo. Effectively carry out safety and security policies that provide for protection of visitors, employees, animals and zoo assets. Duties will include but are not limited to monitoring and reporting on the following: air & water temperatures, water filtration systems, intruder/fire detection and camera surveillance equipment.  Responsible for training of security officers in all aspects of their assignment, including radio communication, foot patrols, lock ups, reports, fire and intrusion alarm systems, monitoring and recording of temperatures, lighting, proper procedures relating to specific special requests, any other security related duties.

Must have a minimum of 2 years security experience and degree in Criminal Justice or related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience in law enforcement, firefighting, or military service preferred. Full-Time Development Database Manager
The Development Database Manager will oversee, manage and maintain the Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge, Outbound online membership store, Centerstage, Sendblaster, and Membership POS and provide training, data entry and computer/software support. Manage the membership processing area and supervise membership staff. Requires strong database management, Excel, alpha/numeric data entry skills, communication skills and the ability to work with vendors to trouble-shoot software issues.

Requires a BS in management or computer science, and a minimum of two years exp. in database management, computer/data entry science, or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Part-Time Positions - Normal work week requires working flexible hours including weekends and holidays. Positions may require working in all weather conditions, the ability to stand for extended periods of time and walk extensively on Zoo grounds. 

Seasonal Positions – Seasonal positions begin in the April/May timeframe and end in the August/September timeframe. Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays. Positions may require working in all weather conditions, the ability to stand for extended periods of time and walk extensively on Zoo grounds.

Back of House Catering Leaders and Supervisors (Part-Time and Seasonal) - These positions are responsible for overseeing events in all of the Catering facilities and supervising the BOH staff.  Requires knowledge of food sanitation guidelines, exceptional customer service skills and at least 1-2 years supervisory food service experience.

Business Office Clerk (Part-Time) - The Toledo Zoo Finance Department is looking for 3-4 part-time Business Office Clerks. Experience with cash handling and Microsoft Excel preferred. The duties include, but are not limited to; balancing daily deposits from previous day with register drawer, entering data from daily deposit into computer using Microsoft Excel and preparing consolidated daily reports, maintains currency & coin supply, processing & balancing of membership applications, assist Cash Control Coordinator with overseeing the credit card system for all cash operations and ordering supplies, collects and counts monies from various donation wells throughout the zoo and utilizes various types of equipment and machinery including a cash jetscan/jetsort, adding machine, computer, printer, copier, currency counter/endorser, coin sorter/counter, crimper, and general office supplies. Carnivore Café (Part-Time) - Employees of the Cafe provide fast, friendly service to Zoo guests. Positions include deli staff, cooks, front line staff, hospitality staff, and production staff. May be responsible for maintaining cleanliness of department, running cash registers, cooking, food preparation and serving. Customer service and the ability to engage guests as well as the ability to work well on a team required.

Chef’s Assistant (Part-Time) - This position is responsible for overseeing the service operations of the catering and employee kitchen and picnic areas to provide friendly, fast, and quality services to the Zoo visitors. The Chef’s Assistant will assist the Executive Chef and /or the Sous Chef in the kitchen areas of the Zoo. This position will supervise employees as well as maintain a safe and sanitary working environment for catered events. Requires knowledge of food sanitation guidelines, exceptional customer service skills and at least 1-2 years supervisory food service experience.

Front of House Catering (Part-Time and Seasonal) – Employees are responsible for set up and tear down as well as management of catered Zoo events that could include banquets, picnics, weddings, special member events, public events, concerts and other catered events. Looking to hire servers and bartenders. Catering, restaurant and food service experience a plus!

Front of House Catering Bartender Supervisor (Seasonal) - This position is responsible for overseeing bartenders and events at various sites, supervising the staff, following policies and procedures and working with clients to ensure customer satisfaction.  Also organizes and maintains stock areas and assists with inventory/audits. Requires bartending experience, knowledge of food sanitation guidelines, exceptional customer service skills and at least 1-2 years supervisory food service experience. Must be available nights and weekends.

Front of House Catering Supervisor (Part-Time) - This position is responsible for overseeing events at various sites, supervising the catering staff, following policies and procedures and working with clients to ensure customer satisfaction.  Requires knowledge of food sanitation guidelines, exceptional customer service skills and at least 1-2 years supervisory food service experience. Must be available nights and weekends.

Membership Office (Part-Time) - Provides excellent customer service and accepts membership sales over the phone. Performs miscellaneous clerical duties and data entry as assigned. Customer service experience, ability to work most weekends and some holidays, data entry experience, and Microsoft Word and Excel knowledge a plus! Membership Sales (Part-Time) - Position requires approaching Zoo visitors to solicit the sale of Zoo membership’s on-grounds and will also assist with various administrative tasks.  Must have experience working with computer systems and have the ability to approach guests in a fun, positive manner. Merchandise – In Park and North Star (Part-Time Positions) - Employees assist visitors with merchandise selections, stock merchandise, operate cash registers, maintain cleanliness of department and provide excellent customer service to Zoo guests. Customer service and retail experience a plus!

North and South Concessions (Part-Time Positions) – Employees will work in a fast-paced food service environment and will have high visitor interaction. Responsibilities could include cash handling, working with food preparation, working in concession stands, organizing and conducting birthday parties and maintaining cleanliness of department. Applicants over 21 years of age may also be considered for our Kibanda stand, where alcohol is served. Outgoing personality required for all positions!

Park Operations (Part-Time and Seasonal) - Employees take care of a variety of visitor needs throughout the Zoo and may work in the following areas; Admissions, Parking Lot, Rides, Cashier, Zoo Exhibits (Aquarium Touch Tank, Penguin walkthrough and Galapagos Tortoise exhibits). Will also assist with event set up and clean up and provide excellent customer service to all Zoo guests. These positions require outgoing, friendly and energetic individuals who engage guests throughout the park while maintaining the safety of both guest and animals.

Recruiting Coordinator (Seasonal) - Position runs March 23 – August 19. Responsibilities include full-cycle recruiting in a high volume, fast paced environment, reference checking all potential hires and conducting new hire orientations and Zoo tours. Will be responsible for scheduling pre-employment screenings, coordinating new hire orientations with employees and department managers, setting up orientations and completing all necessary paperwork. Will also be responsible for planning and supervising special events for part-time/seasonal employees, answering telephones, filing, general office work and other projects as assigned. Hours would be part-time in March and April and up to 40 hours a week May-August. Must be willing to adjust schedule to work occasional evenings and weekends. Will be responsible for scheduling pre-employment screenings, coordinating new hire orientations with employees and department managers, setting up orientations and completing all necessary paperwork. Will also be responsible for planning and supervising special events for part-time/seasonal employees, answering telephones, filing, general office work and other projects as assigned. Associates degree in Business Administration, HR or other relevant degree preferred with a minimum of one year experience. Must be proficient in MS Office, have excellent organizational skills, presentation skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Average 25-28 hours per week. Warehouse Supervisor - This year round part time position supervises the warehouse employees. This position receives, pickup and delivery of supplies, food and merchandise on and off Zoo grounds. Must have a positive attitude, excellent computer, and communication skills. This position deals with various departments in the Zoo and vendors. Must be able to climb ladders, stand for long periods of time, lift at least 70 lbs. occasionally, and up to 30 lbs. continuously. Must be able to maintain a clean, safe work area and be extremely organized. Will also be required to be forklift certified. Must be 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Zoo’s fleet insurance carrier. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and some weekend and holiday work. Wedding Coordinator (Seasonal) - Duties include meeting with clients to arrange and plan events, working with Catering & Group Sales to set up, assist and tend to clients’ requests. Attendance at events is necessary to ensure complete customer satisfaction, so candidates must be available on weekends and evenings and be in professional attire. Must have excellent organization ability, attention to detail, phone and interpersonal skills and be able to work under (some) stressful situations.
